Choosing the Right English Exam for Australian Migration

Published on 4 July 2026 • By Siva Kumar Chedde

Demonstrating English language proficiency is a core requirement for many Australian visa pathways, including Skilled Migration, Employer Sponsorship, and Graduate visas.

The Australian Department of Home Affairs (DHA) accepts specific tests to measure your English ability. However, not all tests are structured the same, and costs, testing experiences, and results turnaround times vary significantly.

Furthermore, a critical regulation to keep in mind is that onlysecure, in-person test centre exams are accepted. Online or “at-home” versions (such as TOEFL iBT Home Edition or IELTS Online or LanguageCert Online) are not valid for Australian migration purposes.

Here, we compare the four most popular approved English exams to help you decide which one fits your needs.
